Life After the Event
Life After the Event by Serene Teo
When the lights go out and the applause fades, another life begins.
For decades, these horses were known for what they could do. They raced, they performed, and they carried the expectations of a sport. When the Singapore racing industry closed, their role changed—but their story did not end.
Dignity Beyond Performance is a documentary photography project exploring the lives of former racehorses after racing. Rather than focusing on competition, these photographs observe quiet moments of rest, awareness, vulnerability and the environments these horses now call home.
This project asks a simple question:
When performance ends, does dignity end too?
I believe every life deserves dignity beyond the purpose society assigns to it.
Photographed in Singapore with Leica, this long-term visual story is part of my continuing exploration of documentary, fine art photography, and visual storytelling through observation and patience.
