Photography was always part of the furniture in my childhood home, judging by the insurmountable number of albums strewn about, though it was my mother who truly set the stage as our resident "pop-shot artist," blinding us kids with aggressive flashes and demanding forced smiles. I was a late bloomer to the craft, only starting at age 30 when my father gifted me a Pentax film SLR, but from there, the rest was history. I plunged into a whirlwind four years of shooting weddings, fashion runways, and events, until the grind caught up with me and I retired. Yet, you can't run from a true passion forever; after an 18-year hiatus, an unstoppable yearning to create images reignited three years ago, sparking an incredible journey of self-discovery. The last eighteen months have been a beautiful return to basics—shooting film and completely re-falling in love with the tactile process of the medium. Today, I'm out there creating with the words of my late mentor, Alan Lee, ringing in my ears: “Lock and load, cowboy! And change the colour!”—a philosophy that, naturally, always paired best with copious amounts of whiskey.

Serene Teo is a Singapore-based photographer whose work is shaped by observation, patience, and lived experience. Working across both digital and analogue formats, she photographs intuitively across a wide range of subjects, guided less by genre and more by attentiveness to people, place, and time.
Serene's photographs have been exhibited and featured across photography platforms and independent publications, including features by Leica Singapore. She has also collaborated with Leica Singapore on a MEV-1 video shoot and was featured during the Leica Singapore Noctilux 35mm lens launch, contributing her photographic perspective and visual approach through both collaborations and exhibitions.
In 2022, Serene was recognised at the Crowbar Awards for her documentary series, receiving one Bronze award and two Finalist distinctions. Alongside her personal practice, she is actively involved in photographic curation, contributing to the growth and support of the wider photography community.
Balancing a professional career alongside her creative work, Serene continues to develop long-term photographic projects driven by curiosity, sensitivity, and a quiet commitment to seeing.

Photography is emancipation from this chaotic world of madness. This freedom is but a panacea which allows myself to immortalize (shape, and even reshape) the moment. I watched, listened, transpose, and yet never fully understand what’s there. That said, what I captured is what I perceived in that moment. It is never meant to be studied. It is just a relief for me, taking a breath of fresh air and freeze a moment in life’s passage of time. Hopefully photography could be a elixir for someone else too.

Sui Guan is a photographer working across urban and documentary scenes, drawn to the quiet structure beneath everyday life.
